Comprehensive prostate cancer service

The Wesley Hospital offers the most comprehensive urology services in Queensland, with a focus on the treatment of prostate cancer. Together on one campus, our team of urologists, radiologists, radiation and medical oncologists provide complete and evidence-based care for patients with prostate cancer.

mpMRI

In 2012, urologists from The Wesley Hospital, together with radiologists from I-MED Radiology (previously Wesley Medical Imaging) pioneered and trialled MRI to detect/diagnose prostate cancer. The technique, called Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) provided the first reliable imaging of cancer within the prostate, revolutionising prostate cancer diagnosis for patients around the world. MpMRI has a 92% specificity in diagnosing life-threatening cancer and can reduce the need for multiple biopsies.

PSMA PET

PSMA PET stands for the Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan. PSMA is present in prostate cancer cells. A small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the bloodstream. This tracer binds to cells with PSMA, and a CT scan is performed. The CT scan will show any deposits of prostate cancer cells around the body (greater than 5mm). PSMA PET scan may be used during diagnosis and staging or if there is a rise in PSA levels after treatment, to show if any prostate cancer cells have escaped.

At The Wesley Hospital, we offer prostate cancer patients a range of treatment options for both local and advanced prostate cancer, including:

In consultation with your urologist, you have access to the treatment option that is most appropriate for you. These services are complemented by specialised nursing staff, including a Prostate Cancer Support Nurse, and a dedicated urology ward in The Wesley’s East Wing.

Our Prostate Cancer Support Nurse (PCSN) provides information and support to patients and their families throughout their prostate cancer journey and treatment. In addition to pre-operative education and visits during the hospital admissions, you may contact the PCSN at any stage with questions or concerns. Reliable information, clinical and emotional support and assistance with management of side effects are all part of the service for prostate cancer patients at The Wesley.

Our PCSN works with the multidisciplinary team, including urologists, wards, physiotherapists and preadmission clinic to ensure your experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible.
