Antenatal classes

Wesley Maternity offers the following classes to help you and your family prepare for the birth of your child:

Parents-to-be Program

This is a program that provides valuable education and tips on preparing for labour and the arrival and care of your newborn. It is aimed a first-time parents, however existing parents who are expecting a new addition to their family are also welcome.

We recommend that you start this program before 36 weeks into pregnancy. 

There are two types of classes available: 

Class 1 : Virtual 

A two hour narrated PowerPoint presentation that includes links to specific video clips.  A unique link will be emailed to you and this will give you access to the presentation for two weeks.  

On completion of the class you are invited to contact us by email with any questions you have and one of our midwife facilitators will contact you. 

Class 2: Face to Face 

These classes are held on alternate Saturdays and run from 9:00am to 3:00pm.  The class is facilitated by one of our experience midwives.  This class includes an extensive tour of the postnatal ward including the birth suite and operating theatre where the majority of caesarean sections are performed. 

Each class will focus on different topics and they are interactive, small group focused, with hands on activities.

  • When to come to hospital
  • Extensive tour of birth suites and post-natal maternity
  • Three stages of normal labour and birth
  • Pain cycle – coping strategies for pain
  • Induction of labour
  • Caesarean section (procedure and post op care)
  • Unexpected outcomes – including forceps, vacuum and sick and premature babies
  • Characteristics of a newborn baby
  • The first five days – postnatal ward routine
  • Settling techniques, sleep patterns and SIDS
  • An introduction to breastfeeding
  • Perinatal mental health for the family
  • Community support groups and resources

Prices:

  • Virtual class -  Free of charge  
  • Face to face class - $200

All classes include light refreshments. Please advise of specific dietary requirements when booking.

Extended Breastfeeding Class 

This is a dedicated three hour class that is run by our Lactation Consultants for both new mothers and also existing mothers who have had challenges breastfeeding with previous babies. This class expands on the Parents-to-be Program, and provides more in-depth information to further your understanding and skills about breastfeeding.  There is no pre-requisite for coming to this class.  The class is held every Tuesday between 8:30am and 11:30am.  You are welcome to attend at any stage of your pregnancy. 

Topics covered include:

  • How to position and latch your baby
  • How you know your baby is well latched
  • What to expect during the first week
  • Baby's hunger cues
  • How often the baby needs to feed
  • Health benefits of breastfeeding for you and your baby
  • Natural patterns of breastfeeding
  • The benefits of rooming in
  • Challenges that may arise and how to manage these
  • Community support for breastfeeding parents
  • Feeding multiple babies (if required)

Price:

Breastfeeding class $80

You also have the option to book into our women’s health physiotherapy outpatient clinic for a one-on-one appointment e.g. for review of pelvic girdle or musculoskeletal pain, migraines, constipation/bowel issues, pelvic floor dysfunction or for further advice on safe exercise during pregnancy.

It is also encouraged to see a women’s health physiotherapist after the birth of your baby for a postnatal check-up. We have access to your hospital chart and provide written correspondence to your obstetrician.
