What is obstetrics and gynaecology?

Both obstetrics and gynaecology deal with the female reproductive system. An obstetrician specialises in delivering and providing medical care to women during pregnancy (antenatal), at the birth of their baby, and after the birth (postnatal). Obstetricians are also highly skilled to provide care for complex or high-risk pregnancies and births. Learn more about our Wesley obstetricians and maternity services.

A gynaecologist specialises in women’s reproductive health, diagnosing and treating issues related to the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Urogynaecology is a specialised field of obstetrics and gynaecology that deals with female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery; while gynaecology oncology is a specialised field that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system.

At The Wesley Hospital, our Brisbane gynaecologists offer a comprehensive range of gynaecological procedures and surgery, including:

  • Gynae-oncology surgery.
  • Hysterectomies.
  • Laparoscopic surgery.
  • Robotic surgery
  • Urogynaecology surgery.

Our gynaecologists are here to support you, treating a range of conditions, including endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic organ prolapse, fertility issues, pelvic inflammatory disease and cancer.

Endometriosis is an often painful disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue that normally lines the uterus, called the endometrium, grows in other parts of the body. Surgical treatment aims to remove as much of the endometriosis as possible. Surgery may also be combined with medicines.

Myomectomy involves removal of fibroids, which can grow in various parts of the uterus. The decision to perform a myomectomy depends on several factors, including symptoms such as heavy periods, infertility, and the size, quantity and location of the fibroids.

Ovarian cysts are common in women with regular periods. If tests indicate your cyst is non-cancerous, your doctor may suggest no treatment is necessary but that you have regular check-ups. If the cyst doesn’t go away, grows, or causes pain, or if the cyst may be cancerous, your doctor may suggest surgery such as a laparoscopy.

Our gynaecologists are here to diagnose, support, advise and counsel you and your partner on issues related to fertility and fertility management. The Wesley Hospital is also affiliated with the Monash IVF multidisciplinary team of fertility specialists, fertility nurses, scientists, counsellors and patient co-ordinators. For advice about in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and appointments, contact Monash IVF Wesley Auchenflower.
