Colon cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the colon. Signs of colon cancer include blood in the stool or a change in bowel habits. Tests that examine the colon and rectum are used to diagnose colon cancer before your colorectal doctor decides treatment options.
Diverticulitis is a condition that occurs when small pouches, or sacs, form and push outward through weak spots in the wall of your colon, sometimes resulting in abdominal pain and bleeding. Uncomplicated diverticulitis may be treated by change in diet and medication while chronic conditions may require surgical intervention.
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are gastrointestinal disorders collectively known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Both conditions affect the bowel. Crohn’s disease can cause inflammation and irritation in any part of the digestive tract, while inflammation from ulcerative colitis occurs in the lining of the large intestine or colon. Symptoms of IBD can vary depending on severity but commonly include diarrhoea, fatigue, abdominal pain and cramping and unintended weight loss. IBD can be managed effectively, and treatments may vary for each patient. Your Wesley doctor will discuss treatment options including medicines, bowel rest, and possible surgery.
