Roslyn celebrates 25 years of giving back
Meet the lovely Roslyn Male who has been volunteering at the Wesley Breast Clinic since 1997 and says it’s the best job she’s ever had.
Since she and her husband sold their farm in Far North Queensland they moved to Brisbane and Roslyn began looking for a volunteering opportunity.
“A family friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer and treated here at the Wesley,” Ms Male explains.
“He was treated so well and all the volunteers were so beautiful and kind to him I knew this was where I wanted to work.”
“My role is all about the patients, I am here to support them and give them what they need.”
Ms Male explained that some days women come into the clinic thinking they are having a routine breast screen and will be in and out in a short period of time.
“Sadly, we occasionally have to give women devastating news and I am proud and humbled to be able to offer support and comfort during such a difficult time,” she said.
“I enjoy being able to sit and talk with people and help take their mind off things.
“The people here are just wonderful from the patients, doctors, nurses, sonographers and reception staff, I think the highlight for me is the friendships I have made here.”
Roslyn says she gets so much from volunteering and would encourage anyone to take it up.
When she’s not volunteering she is chasing after her 11 grandchildren who keep her on her feet.
