Now in its fourth year, the innovative Wesley Internship Program is the only dedicated intensive hospital-based internship program for Queensland high school students.

Chosen from a field of more than 400 applicants, the students spent the first week of their Christmas holidays learning from medical, allied and other health professionals through presentations, tours, simulation labs and practical work placements.

Wesley Hospital General Manager Ann Maguire said the program aimed to offer students a practical insight into the workings of a busy hospital.

“Students going into Year 12 have some big decisions to make about their study and career pathways after school,” she said.

“By spending a week with us, the students have the opportunity for a hands-on educational experience to gain an understanding of a range of careers within a hospital setting including nursing, medicine, allied health, and support services.”

“I believe the internship program is a valuable experience and an excellent launching pad for the healthcare workforce of the future.”

This year’s Wesley school internship program will see students learn skills in clinical simulation laboratories, spend time touring hospital departments including theatres, wards and kitchen areas, and participate in presentations and discussions with healthcare practitioners.

Shania Feroz from Redeemer Lutheran College in Rochedale said she wanted to work in the healthcare industry to make a positive difference in people’s lives.

“I have been able to gain an overview of the various departments within the hospital and gain an insight into the skills required in this field which will help me to make decisions about my future,” she said.
