Vale Dorothy ‘Joan’ Webber
It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of former Wesley Hospital Auxiliary President, Joan Webber, on 12 June 2021 aged 87.
Joan will be fondly remembered by The Wesley community for her dedicated service and generosity to The Wesley Hospital Auxiliary, formerly the St Helen’s Methodist Hospital South Brisbane Women’s Auxiliary.
Joan joined St Helen’s Methodist Hospital Women’s Auxiliary in 1964 and continued to be an active member and secretary for the Auxiliary when the hospital closed in 1977 and patients were transferred to the newly opened Wesley Hospital in Auchenflower. In 1994, Joan was appointed Auxiliary President, a role in which she served for more than 16 years.
She worked tirelessly over more than 47 years, volunteering her time and efforts to champion the work of the Auxiliary, which continues today to raise much-needed funds to support The Wesley Hospital.
By the time Joan resigned in 2010, more than $3 million had been raised to purchase equipment for the Wesley Breast Clinic, Dialysis Unit and Wesley Medical Research, to fund research scholarships and projects, and so much more.
In 2006, Joan was honoured with a Queensland Premier’s Award for her outstanding voluntary service to the community, and was named one of Queensland’s ‘Quiet Achievers’.
The Wesley community extends its heartfelt condolences to Joan’s children, Philip and Karen, and their families at this time.
