Dr Kelly Stanton has recently joined Premier Cardiology at the Wesley Hospital. She is providing a consulting and cardiac testing service and is taking new referrals.

She is a clinical cardiologist with experience in all aspects of cardiac care. She has a strong interest in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease including heart attacks, lipid disorders, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and exercise and sports cardiology. She is committed to providing excellent clinical care, working with her patients to achieve their lifestyle and occupational goals, from staying healthy and physically active to maintaining a high level of exercise or work capacity.

In addition to being a clinical cardiologist, she is a cardiac imaging specialist with expertise in echocardiography, exercise stress testing, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT (calcium score and CT coronary angiogram). She also specialises in exercise and sports cardiology and occupational cardiology, with speciality training in aviation medicine, and is registered with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority as well as working with Defence to keep our service personnel healthy.

She completed her specialist training in cardiology in 2014 at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and has completed a cardiac MRI fellowship at Cardiovascular Medical Resonance Sydney. Her PhD looked at the effect of exercise on cardiometabolic health, cardiovascular risk and atherosclerosis including lipids, lipids subfractions and inflammation. The second aspect of her PhD focused on the effect of exercise on cardiac remodelling in elite atheltes and occupational athletes. She has worked with cyclists (National Road Series), soccer players (A-league club) and kayakers (previous Olympic athletes), as well as occupational athletes such as army soldiers, whose work places high demands on the cardiovascular system. She was awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council scholarship for her PhD and has published in international medical journals.

Dr Stanton was awarded the Bryan Hudson medal for the highest achieving physician in Australasia for her specialist exams. Prior to starting at the Wesley she has worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St George Hospital in Sydney, as well as the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

She is passionate about advancing medical research and education and is an examiner for doctors completing their specialist exams through the Royal Australian College of Physicians and is the clinical lead for Medical Specialities at the University of Queensland Royal Brisbane Clinical Unit.
