Our allied health professionals at The Wesley Pain and Spine Centre provide group-based programs for people with persistent pain, as well as private consultations for outpatients, in collaboration with pain medicine physicians.

Persistent Pain Management Programs

The Wesley Persistent Pain Management Programs are for people who have:

  • Persistent pain that is limiting their lifestyle and ability to perform everyday tasks.
  • Been unable to return to their full work duties or usual activities.
  • Have no further surgical or medical treatments planned at the current time.

We aim to:

  • Improve your physical function.
  • Facilitate a return to your daily activities or work duties.
  • Improve your ability to manage pain and gain control over your life.
  • Promote a reduction in the use of medication to control your pain.
  • Increase your self-esteem and confidence.
  • Improve your understanding of your diagnosis.

You will receive a comprehensive discharge report with outcomes and recommendations for future management, which will also be forwarded to relevant health professionals and other parties, such as your case manager if appropriate, when you finish the program.

Our Persistent Pain Management Programs are group based, usually with six to eight participants. They use the skills and expertise of physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, occupational therapists and psychologists, as well as clinical nursing support to help you to achieve the best outcomes. Your suitability to undertake a Persistent Pain Management Program will be discussed with you during your initial appointment with a specialist pain medicine physician.

Funding is available through private health funds, workers’ compensation and compulsory third-party insurance. We will review your private hospital cover prior to admission and advise you of any excess or default payment if applicable. Patients will only be responsible for program costs if written approval is not received from WorkCover Queensland, Workers’ Compensation, compulsory third-party insurance companies or Veterans’ Affairs (White Card) prior to the commencement of the program.

If you have any queries or require more information, please contact the Wesley Pain and Spine Centre.

Specialist pain medicine physicians

We work collaboratively with specialist pain medicine physicians to ensure your care is co-ordinated and individualised to provide you with a treatment plan to best manage your persistent pain. All pain physicians working within our service are highly experienced and supportive of a multidisciplinary approach to your rehabilitation. Following your initial assessment, your pain physician will outline the best pathway for your ongoing care.

Indications for referral:

  • Pain for more than three months.
  • Pain that has not responded as expected to medical or surgical treatment.
  • Rehabilitation that has not progressed as expected.
  • Increased reliance on medication to cope with pain.
  • Difficulty with returning to work due to ongoing pain.
  • Excessive dependency on healthcare professionals.

A doctor’s referral, from either a GP or specialist, which includes your name, diagnosis, address, phone, date of birth and claim number (if relevant), is required. Your referral can be sent to The Wesley Pain and Spine Centre by either fax or post.

Persistent pain outpatient services

We also offer private consultation with our experienced staff in the management of persistent pain presentations.

Our services include:

  • Pain physiotherapist.
  • Exercise physiology.
  • Psychology.
  • Occupational therapy.

These services are indicated where attendance at our program is not suitable or if one-to-one appointments are more appropriate to meet your individual needs. Our team may also recommend follow-up outpatient appointments following completion of a Persistent Pain Management Program if this is indicated.

You do not need a doctor’s referral to attend a private outpatient appointment but we do encourage collaboration with your treating general practitioner or specialist so that we can gain a full understanding of your pain presentation. Rebates may be available through your private health fund or costs of outpatient appointments may be covered by Workers’ Compensation and compulsory third-party insurance if pre-approved.
