The Wesley Hospital’s team of Brisbane ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors is ready to help you or your child with problems associated with the ear, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck. They are trained in the medical and surgical management of ENT disorders and diseases, ranging from chronic sinusitis, hearing loss, ear infections, and recurrent tonsilitis, to more complex problems such as cancers of the head and neck.
Common surgical procedures include:
Glue ear is a common childhood condition, but it can also affect adults. The eustachian tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat is unable to drain excess middle ear fluid, which can lead to trouble with hearing and balance. Tiny tubes called grommets are surgically inserted into the eardrums to allow air to enter the middle ear and drain the fluid to the back of the nose and throat.
Sinus surgery is a very effective treatment option for nasal polyps. Sinusitis sometimes causes the membranes of the sinuses to gradually bulge out into the nasal cavity. Nasal polyps can cause nasal blockage, mouth breathing, sinus infections and even decreased sense of smell.
A myringoplasty is an operation to repair a hole (perforation) in your eardrum caused by an infection in your middle ear or by trauma to the side of the head. Your surgeon will use a graft (piece of tissue) to cover the hole. A myringoplasty can prevent infections and sometimes improve your hearing.
Tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) may be required if your child suffers from chronic tonsilitis, there is a growth in or on the tonsils, or if they have difficulty in breathing through their nose or mouth because of swollen tonsils leading to problems with sleeping.
