Special Care Nursery

What is the Special Care Nursery?

Our Special Care Nursery provides care for sick babies and premature babies from 32 weeks’ gestation who may need extra support. It is designed to provide medical and nursing care that is tailored to suit your baby’s specific needs.

• The Special Care Nursery has 12 beds.

• It is supported by highly experienced neonatal intensive care trained staff, lactation consultants and midwives.

• Paediatric support is available 24 hours a day.

Visiting

Having contact with your baby is an important part of their care and recovery so we encourage you to visit as often and as long as you like. We do ask, however, that you and your family respect the privacy of other babies and their families in the Special Care Nursery, by visiting only your baby.

You will be given an access card to the Special Care Nursery and to the Wesley Maternity ward. Please keep it with you at all times.

Support for parents

Everyone responds differently to the birth of a premature or sick baby. You and your partner may experience a rollercoaster ride of feelings during your baby’s stay in the Special Care Nursery.

Counselling via our chaplaincy services is available within the hospital. Feel free to use these services if you need them. The nursing staff are always available to assist you and your baby so please do not hesitate to ask any questions. If anything is bothering you, it’s important to us.
